Marisol Rubio for San Ramon City Council, District 4
PROVEN EXPERIENCE TRANSPARENCY VISION

From Humble Beginnings to Leadership
"You might be poor, your shoes might be broken, but your mind is a palace." - Frank McCourt
Having held my first job at age 12 and being the daughter of a first-generation immigrant parent, who graduated with a Master of Education and taught in a high-need school district for over 30 years, I learned early in life to fight for a better future for my family and my community. That is why as a parent of a childhood brain cancer survivor with multiple lifelong disabilities, I decided to turn my hardships into solutions for our community.

When my infant daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer, I advocated tirelessly on her behalf against an unresponsive healthcare system and later against a woefully under-resourced education system. My determination to ensure her full recovery by taking the lead in her medical care and choosing her chemotherapy over the doctors' recommended hospice care, led to her long-term survival from terminal cancer. Likewise, my education in Neurobiology enabled me to provide my daughter the academic support she needed to succeed and to go onto college despite her learning disabilities. Equally, I will dedicate myself to identifying and meeting our community’s needs by maintaining an open-door policy with our residents and by consistently seeking areas of improvement and viable solutions.
My experience as a Bilingual Science Teacher, Health Promotion Officer, Patient-/Family-Centered Care Educator, Disability and Women’s Reproductive Health Founding Advisory Board Member, and Foster Care Advisory Board Member has underscored for me the value of having strong, diverse community programs that reflect San Ramon’s varied needs, foster our resident’s interests, and support our children’s educational development. I will advocate for robust, accessible family and senior programs, increased walkability to key businesses, and connect non-motorized biking and pedestrian trails to reduce traffic and promote community health and well-being.

As Director of Government Relations for the San Francisco Bay Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, I understand the economic challenges small businesses face and will support them during these unprecedented times. Moreover, with Chevron relocating in San Ramon, we have an opportunity to create new, well-paying jobs in biotech, renewable and alternative energy, and other emerging industries that will drive economic growth, help us meet our state-mandated Regional Housing Needs Allocations with consideration for our residents and our environment, near transportation to reduce traffic, and that offer our residents, including teachers, first responders, and essential workers, an improved work-life balance by introducing more affordable, diverse housing options in the downtown core.
As Director and Vice President of the Dublin San Ramon Services District, I applied my educational background in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley and in environmental advocacy as a Sierra Club San Francisco Bay Chapter Executive Committee Member to protect one of California’s most valuable natural resources – water.
Now, as your City Councilmember, I will support Smart Cities to improve our quality of life, Smart Growth to prevent urban sprawl, and investment in renewable energy projects. In fact, as Co-Chair of a countywide Labor-Climate Task Force, I am already forging the path towards more green jobs and Just Transition.
Community Service Is My Life's Work

Addressing the Board of Supervisors on behalf of SEIU 2015 Home Care Providers
July 26, 2022
Start: 02:07:40 - CCC BOS Public Comment
Since 2004, I have dedicated my life and education towards advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and their home care providers. Why? Because, as a home care provider, I understand how critical our work is to the health and well-being of our loved ones. On more than one occasion, my proactive involvement in my daughter's health care prevented fatal medical errors and led to her successful outcome, including her remission from what was once believed to be terminal brain cancer. Home Care Providers are the backbone of our health care system, and they are saving the lives of their recipients every day as witnessed during the pandemic. They should be able to work without taxing their health and well-being. Without them, our nursing facilities would be overwhelmed, health care costs would sharply rise, and their recipients would be displaced from their homes and receive inferior, impersonal service in a care facility reducing their quality of life. We must do everything possible to maintain and grow this depleting workforce, especially as we face growing demand. The first step towards ensuring that is by providing a living wage.
